There are many intriguing and beautiful objects and artifacts to be found in Hampshire churches, quite often easily overlooked. In the church of St Peter and St Paul in Hambledon is the most exquisite small stained glass window above the font. Known as the Angel window, it is quite simply a beautiful object but in order to see it, you will have to request that the light in the room behind is switched on, otherwise you will miss it completely.

Look out also for the original Saxon building, the palister strips between the Norman arches.
Many Hampshire churches have the most beautiful stained glass, look out for posts on St Mary’s church Selborne, the stunning work of Edward Burne- Jones in Winchester Cathedral or the modern glass in the Garrison church in Old Portsmouth.
Vincent Van Gough was inspired by some stained glass that he saw being made for the parish church in Owslebury.
We can become a little blase about stained glass surrounded as we are by Hampshire churches full of exquisite pieces but they represent an understated art form. The museum of stained glass is located in Ely Cathedral and even if you can’t visit you can search their collections online.
