Chawton Church in Hampshire contains a lovely memorial to a WWI hero
The WWI memorial to Lieutenant Colonel Donald Wood can be found in the church of St Nicholas Chawton Hampshire.
This brave man had already served his country in the Boer War in the defence of Ladysmith in 1899. He was to lose his life at the Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916 aged 38 years old. His memorial is beautifully crafted, the lovely lettering and image conjours up the era of chivalvic codes.
